Tim Cotterill Sculptures - Frogman Sculptures

The Tim Cotterill Frogman Sculpture Collection at Sculpture Gallery

Tim Cotterill is better known as the "Frogman". He has had a life-long fascination with the gorgeous little frogs which lived in the secluded woods close to his childhood home. His wonderful bronze sculptures perfectly capture the whimsical character and joyous nature of these colourful creatures from the English countryside.

Cotterill was born in Leicester in 1950. Although Leicester is an industrial, urban area, it is surrounded by beautiful rural scenes buzzing with a variety of wildlife. Cotterill's love of nature was inspired initially by his mother who would place pictures of colourful birds next to his cot. As he grew up he ventured into the local woodlands where he collected small animals including frogs, newts, toads and tadpoles. He was also allowed to build an aviary in the garden where he bred numerous colourful birds.

He began his working life as an engineer and then moved into auto repairs where he learnt to weld and developed a love for working with metal. He later gained skills as a landscaper and stonemason labouring happily outdoors for many years until one day the weather drove him inside and into an art exhibition. He was fascinated by a display of abstract sculptures and realised that they had been created using skills that he already possessed. He then set about fashioning his first metal sculpture which was an owl and when he managed to sell it he was intoxicated by the thought that someone would put a value on something he had made.

He now had parallel careers in sculpting and building motorbikes and used nature as an inspiration in both endeavours. Fuelled by his dual passions and a love of California he moved back and forth from America working on bikes and sculpting, bursting with the ideas that grew from his time in both countries.

Eventually he gained his own studio in Leicester where he initially produced bird sculptures but it was when he began working on his beloved frogs that he really made his name. His characterful, colourful renditions really struck a chord. He was to return to California to continue his calling and the energy, charm and magic of the frogs was now driven by a new enthusiasm for life born of living in a place that had stolen his heart.

Cotterill's frogs have now stolen many hearts too and he is decidedly now simply the "Frogman! We are sure that you will be delighted with the Tim Cotterill pieces that we are proud to feature in the Sculpture Gallery collection.
