Still life sculptures are a joy to behold when the artist gets them right, and we have collected some truly spectacular examples here. Still life art is an important genre across different art forms in the Western tradition. The history of still life charts an interesting course. In the seventeenth century, the French Academy ranked this genre at the bottom of its hierarchy. Both still life and landscape painting were seen as lowly because they did not take up a human or human scene as subject matter. However, where still life was once considered a relatively stylistically neutral practice, we also have Paul Cézanne, among other cubists, as prime exemplars of how the genre could also be used as a space for pioneering experimentation.

Today, we are far less anthropocentric about our art, so we have no problem with genres, such as still life, which do not necessarily have the human world as the central concern! Of interest instead in still life is the ability to get as close as possible to a sense of the beauty of things, whether they be natural plants, flowers and fruits or they be crafted objects. By focusing so intensely on the still object, artists are able to test their own abilities in describing the shapes and colours of a very specific, often everyday item. It is here that the everyday is given its due magic. The closer one focuses on a single object or a collection of objects, the more one is able to see the astounding beauty in what might generally be passed without an additional glance.

It can be said with great confidence, then, that still life should not be looked down upon like it once was. We believe instead that it should be hailed as being central to what art can offer us.
