What is a limited edition?
The works that we showcase at Sculpture Gallery which are identified as limited editions are neither originals nor merely copies. Sculptures taken from original works are often released in limited editions. The number of pieces available will be restricted and each piece in the edition is an exact replica of the original. The sculptures are cast from a mould of the original and are usually marked with a casting number. In some cases, the pieces will be supplied with a card baring this number.
The size of an edition will be influenced by the sculptor's wishes, the potential demand for the piece and the materials used. The future value of a limited edition sculpture could be dependant on its rarity and therefore on the scope of the edition. Any editions of less than 200 may be considered fine art limited editions as the restricted numbers enable the artist to view and approve every piece. A limited edition sculpture from an original by a celebrated artist could be worth more than an original by a lesser known sculptor.
