Veronica Ballan Sculpture
Veronica Ballan's characterful ceramic animal sculptures have proven so popular that demand now often outstrips supply. Her original ceramic animals are handmade and very labour-intensive creations partly because of the detailed appearance of hair for which they are renowned. About artist Veronica Ballan
Veronica fell in love with the world of art as a child when spending time in her father's studio as he painted. She went on to take art foundation courses at Newcastle College of Art and Sunderland College of Art before studying for a degree in fine art and taking a Post Graduate Certificate of Education at Newcastle University. She then became a teacher whilst honing her techniques at the same time. Her first ceramic figures were made to inspire her pupils and were paper cone shaped angels for Christmas.
Veronica later left teaching to concentrate on her ceramics. The angels soon became a collection of elegant stoneware ladies and these tall, faceless figures were so popular that she couldn't create them quick enough! She worked from a craft gallery which she had founded in an old school house but she later moved to a Georgian house in Alnwick.
Ballan's work expanded to feature her woolly animals and these were eventually to become the principle features of her work. The hairy, slightly whimsical and highly original pieces quickly garnered a significant following. The woolly appearance of the animals is fashioned by using shredded clay which is left to dry naturally before being fired. Ballan now accepts commissions for her animals but continues to struggle to keep up with the demand for her pieces.
